Has Humanity Reached Total Depravity? (Part Two)

CGG Weekly by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

After the Flood, God looks at humanity and finds the heart as corrupt as before: "the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth" (Genesis 8:21). The Flood judged sinners and reduced humanity to eight people, but it changed nothing about human character. Babies are born morally neutral, able to do good or evil, yet the flesh pulls them toward selfishness and sin, and carnal nature wants everything for itself. Humanity has not improved since Noah's day, for everyone since has the same wicked nature that God describes in Genesis 6:5 and 8:21. Scripture, the story of God's redemption of mankind, bears this out from beginning to end, showing the depths of man's sin alongside the sublimity of His gracious love. David writes of mankind's corruption in Psalm 14:1-3, and God concludes that people are so full of sin that new attempts to turn them back to Him would be futile, since they would only rebel again. Jeremiah 17:9 declares the heart deceitful above all things and desperately wicked, or incurably sick. In Romans 3:9-18, Paul gives a complete indictment of mankind. Sin comes in degrees, and many try hard to do good as they understand it, yet in God's eyes humans grow corrupt from a young age. Just one sin is enough to incur the penalty of death, and everyone has committed at least one.

Why Preach the Gospel to the World?
