Seal of Approval

Sermonette by Christian D. Hunter

In Revelation chapter 7 an angel ascending from the east carries the seal of the living God and commands the four angels to withhold harm from the earth, sea, and trees until the servants of God are sealed on their foreheads. This sealing applies to the 144,000, marking them prior to destruction and setting them apart as protected servants. The Greek term sphragizo indicates a mark that confers security and preservation. The same sealing concept links directly to the Holy Spirit given at Pentecost, appearing in three New Testament passages where God seals believers with the Spirit as a guarantee of promise and redemption. In II Corinthians 1:22 the sealing and the gift of the Spirit function together as assurance from God through Christ. Ephesians 1:13 connects the seal to trust and belief after hearing the gospel, presenting the Spirit both as God's mark of ownership and as a means of preservation. Ephesians 4:30 adds that sinful actions such as bitterness, wrath, and evil speaking can grieve the sealing Spirit, showing that human conduct affects the seal's effectiveness. These elements together portray the sealing of the 144,000 as an early pattern of the protective and identifying work the Holy Spirit performs in those who remain faithful until redemption.
