The Beauty of God's Law

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

God's law embodies a profound beauty that many fail to perceive, often viewing it as a curse rather than a blessing. This beauty lies in its harmony, purpose, and the wonderful outcomes it produces when followed. Yet, the natural human mind harbors an enmity toward God's law, a hostility rooted in carnal nature, as seen in humanity's innate selfishness and the influence of satan. This antagonism renders unconverted individuals unable to subject themselves to God's instructions, living instead in a state of rebellion against Him. Many nominal Christians reject God's law, preferring a theology that demands no obedience and offers rewards without sacrifice. They see God's law as obsolete, harsh, and irrelevant, ignoring its presence in Scripture and refusing to listen to His Word. This rejection is a deliberate denial of God's authority, as they desire to determine right and wrong for themselves, free from guilt or restriction. Consequently, God allows them to follow their rebellious desires, letting them experience the destructive outcomes of their choices, which often end in grief and death. In contrast, God's law is holy, just, and good, serving as a tool to define sin and guide toward righteousness. It does not cause sin but reveals it, and when followed with the aid of God's Spirit, it leads to life through sanctification. However, for the unconverted, their carnality turns the law into a perceived curse, blaming it for their guilt rather than acknowledging their own sinfulness. They hate God's law because it restricts their behavior and induces guilt, labeling those who keep it as legalists and refusing to see its inherent beauty. The beauty of God's law manifests in its communal benefits, fostering harmony by ensuring rest, trust, and peace among neighbors through commandments like the Sabbath and prohibitions against theft and deceit. It also brings abundant blessings and God's favor to those who obey, promising a life of prosperity and spiritual richness. Furthermore, God's law provides insight into personal character, illuminating the path forward with guidance and understanding. It revives, strengthens, and encourages, offering hope, delight, liberty, and good judgment to those who embrace it. Ultimately, God's law, as an expression of His mind, holds a beauty beyond compare, encapsulating the words of eternal life.
