Seeing Is Not Believing

'Ready Answer' by Ryan McClure

The notion that seeing is believing often guides our acceptance of truth, yet hearing holds a deeper significance in matters of faith. Jesus Himself emphasized this in John 7:29, declaring to Thomas, "Because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." This statement underscores that faith rooted in hearing and trusting the testimony of others, rather than relying solely on visual proof, carries a special blessing. Our eyes can be deceived, as all our senses are susceptible to trickery and distraction, making us vulnerable to misperception. In contrast, faith generated by the evidence of unseen things, as supported by the Word of God, allows us to believe in a Creator whom we cannot see, affirming His existence through the visible creation. As Jesus reiterates in John 20:29, we are among the blessed for believing without having seen Him, finding strength in the unchanging truth of God's words and the power of His Holy Spirit.

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

Spiritually, relying on images leads to shallowness of thought at best and idolatry at its worst. Virtually everything we know about God comes through words.
