Should a Christian Own Pictures and Statues of Jesus (Exodus 20:4)?
Bible Questions & AnswersThe second commandment prohibits the use of anything that represents God or could become an object of worship, stating, "You shall not make for yourself any carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth" (Exodus 20:4). Since Jesus Christ is God, this directly forbids any picture or likeness of His person. Moreover, so-called pictures or statues of Christ bear no resemblance to how He truly looked. Most depictions show Him with long hair, soft feminine features, and a sentimental look, which contradicts the biblical portrayal of His masculinity. The Bible notes that long hair on a man was considered dishonorable in the first century, and Jesus, as a carpenter and outdoor worker, exhibited strength and vigor, evident in actions like driving out moneychangers from the Temple courts and enduring physical hardships. Isaiah describes His human appearance as lacking beauty or comeliness, indicating He was an ordinary-looking young Jew with nothing in His physical form to make Him stand out. Therefore, most images and crucifixes of Jesus oppose every biblical description, giving a false impression of Him in every respect. Instead of focusing on His earthly appearance, we should consider Him in His glorified state as our Savior, High Priest, and soon-coming King, as described by the apostle John with His head and hair white like wool, eyes like a flame of fire, and countenance as the sun shining in its full strength.
