Pure in Heart

Sermon by Bill Onisick

During this pre-Passover time, we are called to examine our hearts alongside God, measuring them against His holy standard. God searches and penetrates our hearts intimately, as seen in Jeremiah 17:10, where He tests the mind and gives to each according to their ways and the fruit of their doings. Our hearts, deceitful above all things and desperately wicked as described in Jeremiah 17:9, require cleansing from their inherent corruption and pride, likened to leavening that puffs up with self-serving deceit. God promises a transformation in Ezekiel 36:26, declaring that He will give us a new heart and put a new spirit within us, removing the heart of stone and replacing it with a heart of flesh. This cleansing is essential, for out of the heart spring the issues of life, as Proverbs 4:23 instructs us to guard our hearts with all diligence. Matthew 5:8 blesses the pure in heart, for they shall see God, emphasizing that a heart like Jesus Christ's—meek and lowly—becomes pure when filled with the clear, clean water of His Holy Spirit. Hebrews 10:22 urges us to draw near to God with a true heart, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and washed with pure water through Jesus Christ's sacrifice. Similarly, I Peter 1:22 calls us to purify our souls by obeying the truth through the Spirit, loving one another fervently with a pure heart. As we approach God in prayer and examination, we must ask for His help to cleanse our evil hearts, acknowledging our shortcomings and seeking to align with His will. Our heart, likened to a bucket under a waterfall, overflows with what is poured into it. If filled with God's pure Holy Spirit, it reflects His holy heart, producing fruit that flows out as rivers of living water, as Jesus confirms in John 7:38. We must guard against polluted influences and focus on God's spiritual fountainhead, allowing His cleansing to transform us during this sacred time of self-examination.
