The Tent of God
Article by Ronny H. GrahamLiving in tents is a significant theme, often symbolizing temporary dwellings. Paul metaphorically describes our physical bodies as tents, temporary abodes in which we live all the days of our lives. In these bodily tents, we await the fulfillment of a divine promise, the glorious, incorruptible, immortal body that God will grant to His elect. God, who has prepared us for this transformation, also shapes us through life's circumstances to train us for eternal life as spirit beings. His Spirit serves as a foretaste of the full spiritual existence we are guaranteed to enjoy. Just as prisoners in a Civil War camp had to follow strict tent rules to survive, we must live as cleanly as possible, dwell in peace with our brethren, and keep their best interests at heart. We must remain vigilant, for our adversary, the devil, seeks to destroy God's tent-dwellers and rob them of their inheritance. David, in Psalm 15, asks who may abide in the Lord's tabernacle, providing a list of rules for God's people to follow. By adhering to these, we prepare for eternal life and secure a fixed, eternal dwelling place. Ultimately, like Abraham, who lived in a temporary tent awaiting God's promises, we look forward to a holy, eternal city, New Jerusalem. A voice from heaven describes this future in tent terms, declaring that the tabernacle of God will be with men, and He will dwell among them as their God. At that time, God's purpose fulfilled, we will dwell with Him in His glorious, many-roomed house forever.
