The Two Shall Become One

Sermon by Bill Onisick

From the very beginning, God's awesome plan was for two to become one. In the creation account, God made multiple pairs, but the last pair, man and woman, is uniquely special. The woman, created in His image just as the man, is not merely a helper in a subordinate sense, but an equal companion to complete him. The Hebrew word for helper, azar, is the same used in the Psalms to describe our reliance on the Lord, showing the profound connection in this relationship. The man is to cleave to his wife, a term meaning to cling, adhere, and be joined together, reflecting the same deep bond we are to have with God. God's design from the start was for one man and one woman to unite and become one flesh, bringing different attributes to complete each other. Despite historical instances of multiple wives among prominent figures, this was not a change in His plan. The first recorded instance of multiple wives, with Lamech, reveals a prideful nature, and subsequent examples consistently show turmoil and division, bearing poor fruit. These accounts serve as lessons, not endorsements, of straying from the original intent of marriage. The marriage covenant is a living demonstration of the loving and faithful relationship He desires with us. Just as two become one in marriage, we are called as the Bride of Christ to be betrothed to one Husband. The physical union mirrors the spiritual union with our Redeemer, emphasizing that an intimate relationship cannot be developed when divided among many, just as we cannot be truly married to God if distracted by other idolatries. From the beginning, God's intent for marriage reflects the harmony and unity He seeks with us, looking forward to the ultimate fulfillment at the marriage supper of the Lamb.

The Purpose of the Marriage Relationship

Sermon by Martin G. Collins

Marriage prepares God's called-out ones to collectively become the bride of Christ. God hates divorce but allows it on grounds of adultery and violence.
