Simple Faith
CGG Weekly by Richard T. RitenbaughFaith, in its simplest form, is trusting God and taking Him at His word. It is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. At its core, faith can be expressed as, If God said it, that's good enough for me. Jesus alludes to this trust when He declares that blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God, as it grows when we hear His promises and believe them. Like Abraham, who trusted God's promise of countless descendants and held to that trust even when tested to sacrifice Isaac, we are called to display such simple faith in our daily lives. Commit your way to the Lord, trust in Him, and He shall bring it to pass.
Faith and the Christian Fight (Part One)
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughFaith is absolutely essential to the Christian's warfare, as it undergirds every aspect of Christian life. Salvation itself is by grace through faith, forming the foundation for the disciple of Christ. As Romans 10:17 declares, faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. This principle reveals how faith in God and in Jesus Christ becomes part of our thinking—through hearing the message of the gospel of the Kingdom of God. It is not merely hearing about other subjects, but specifically hearing the Word of God that directs faith toward Christ as its object, fostering confidence and trust in Him and His work. Hearing, or more precisely listening, is critical, as Jesus frequently exhorted throughout His ministry. Without thoughtful listening, faith will not be directed to the right object, and the correct works will not be produced. Faith is not just a response to hearing; it is a gift from God, as Ephesians 2:8 emphasizes, given when we come into contact with the gospel message. What we do with this gift constitutes our response, manifested in our works. Paul in Hebrews 4:2 underscores the necessity of mixing the preached Word with faith, noting that the Israelites failed to enter God's rest because the Word they heard was not combined with faith, leading to their unbelief and inability to fulfill their responsibilities. This connection between faith and hearing is vital for salvation and spiritual growth. Hearing the gospel, combined with God's action in our minds, sets us on the path to salvation and life, as Jesus affirmed in John 6:63 that His words are spirit and life. Thus, faith, ignited and sustained by hearing God's Word, becomes the conviction that motivates visible action, supporting the Christian in the spiritual battle and ensuring perseverance in the face of trials.
