Jesus encountered demon-possessed men in Gadara, revealing the reality and evil influence of the Devil and his demons. With serious intensity and authority, He openly declared the evil in people's minds and bodies as originating from Satan, the source of wickedness. Demonic powers are exercised directly by Satan, through demons under his command, and via humans he influences or possesses. Those who reject God's authority become subject to Satan's supernatural power, their personality and will overtaken by deceiving, lawless spirits. In demon possession, a spiritual parasite intrudes upon the human body and mind, causing conflict and disharmony. Possession often requires a willing subject, as seen when Satan entered Judas after he entertained betraying the Son of God. Immorality, sensual desires, hatred, and greed can set a person up for possession or strong demonic influence. Most people experience some level of demonic influence through Satan's broadcast of evil attitudes, enticing them to sin through subtle suggestion and enticement, which can escalate to full possession and captivity to the Devil. Evil spirits can possess human bodies, sometimes by invitation, leading to familiarity with demons. Once possession occurs, sensuality and violence become evident, and physical, mental, and spiritual disorders increase, often resulting in confusion, anguish, and insanity. Not all mental disorders stem from possession, though conditions like insanity, epilepsy, blindness, and fevers can be symptoms or aggravated by demonic forces. The Gadarene demoniac's condition, marked by madness, was intensified by extreme demonic influence due to his own wickedness. The Devil, as the prince of the power of the air, regulates the world's present way of life, working in the disobedient, who yield to his authority and become slaves to this evil power.

Demonic influence enters human experience through the pattern established in Eden, where Adam and Eve, though created without an evil nature, freely exposed themselves to Satan's communication and thereby initiated the corruption of mankind's heart, illustrating I Corinthians 15:33's principle that evil communications corrupt good manners. Significantly, Adam and Eve knew they were dealing with Satan, yet a sobering reality is that a spirit being can transfer thoughts into a human mind without the person ever realizing the source, leaving the individual to assume the thoughts originated entirely within himself. This single encounter altered their character permanently, and that corruption was passed to all descendants, so that every person is born innocent yet enters a world already permeated by the spirit of Satan and his demons as well as by the corrupt cultures they have generated through deceived humanity. This creates a double challenge to human innocence, from demons directly and from the world they have shaped, and explains why the vast majority remain unaware they are in bondage to Satan, a blindness so complete that most would scoff if told of it, a condition Paul describes as a veil over the carnal mind that is hostile to God until removed by Him. Even after conversion, the influence absorbed from Satan's world before calling does not vanish instantly; Paul's own account of ongoing internal warfare between the law of sin and the law of his renewed mind reflects the lingering remnant of this demonic and worldly conditioning, requiring continual choice and effort to overcome. Because Satan is identified as the god of this world and its governing spiritual principle, the only communication his world can ultimately offer is inducement to sin, insistently and attractively urging carnal reactions, twisted justifications, pride, and self-righteousness. This is why escape from Babylon cannot be physical alone, since its imprint remains in attitudes and character, but must be achieved by reversing the very process that first introduced sin, choosing God's communication and will over Satan's. John's teaching that hatred of a brother places one in darkness further demonstrates how sin severs communication with God and exposes whose influence a person is actually responding to, since God would never prompt hatred; such conduct instead reveals that the sinner's affections and attentions have drifted toward the world and its underlying spiritual source. The remedy lies in the relationship restored through Jesus Christ, who removed the separation caused by sin and reopened access to God, allowing believers to receive the communication, strength, and gifts necessary to resist the enslaving, deceptive pull of sin, which functions much like an addictive force hardening the mind against righteousness. Continual reliance on prayer, Bible study, meditation, and obedience thus becomes essential to maintaining this restored relationship and resisting the constant, insistent influence of a world still under Satan's governance, since only through sustained communication with God can believers overcome the residual effects of the corruption first introduced through Satan's original deception of mankind.

Demonic influence operates as the invisible power behind Babylon, the anti-God system that has dominated human history since Eden, when Adam and Eve, deceived by Satan, introduced disbelief and corrupted conduct into mankind. This spirit was later perfected and imposed on masses in the original Babylon and again under Nebuchadnezzar, and though God destroyed both empires, their influence reverberates in Western culture today. In the end time, Babylon's power has expanded worldwide through mass communication, making Satan's deceptive influence more pervasive than ever, fulfilling Revelation 12:9's description of him deceiving the whole world. Paul identifies Satan as "the prince of the power of the air," meaning he commands the jurisdiction of the first heaven, the very atmosphere in which humans live and breathe. Because air is the medium through which most communication travels, sound, sight, and even subtler forms of transmission, demons can communicate deceptive thoughts and attitudes directly into human minds without people realizing it. This is illustrated by Masaru Emoto's studies showing that human emotions can alter water crystal formations, suggesting that if human vibrations affect physical matter, demonic vibrations could likewise influence human thought through the same atmospheric medium. Revelation 18:2 reinforces this by describing Babylon as "a habitation of demons... a cage for every unclean and hated bird," linking demonic spirits to predatory, scavenging birds that inhabit the same "heaven" through which Satan's authority extends. This demonic influence produces the "course of this world" (aion), an invisible, pervasive spirit or atmosphere of thought, attitude, and disposition that shapes human conduct apart from God. Though God created human nature good, it became evil through Satan's influence beginning with Adam and Eve, and this corrupted spirit is now absorbed anew by each person born into the world, not through inheritance but through cultural immersion. Jeremiah 17:9 and Jesus's own words in Luke 11:13 affirm that the human heart is thoroughly, incurably evil, requiring complete replacement through conversion rather than mere improvement. Even converted believers remain vulnerable, as shown when Peter unknowingly became a mouthpiece for Satan in rebuking Christ, demonstrating how easily demonic communication can operate through willing but unaware human agents. Because this influence is spiritual and atmospheric rather than merely physical, "coming out of Babylon" cannot mean fleeing to a physical location, since Satan's influence cannot be outrun. The battle is internal, requiring constant vigilance against absorbed attitudes and conduct. The remedy is cultivating God's Holy Spirit through Bible study, prayer, meditation, fasting, and obedience, maintaining spiritual closeness to God and Jesus Christ as the shield against demonic communication until the future age when such influence will no longer afflict humanity.
