The children of Israel divided into two kingdoms after Jeroboam led a tax revolt against Rehoboam. Judah, Benjamin, and Levi remained under the Davidic monarchy in the south, while the remaining ten tribes formed the northern Kingdom of Israel. Jeroboam instituted religious changes that became a sin for the house of Israel, building shrines at Bethel and Dan with golden calves, altering the fall festival from the seventh month to the eighth, and appointing non-Levite priests. The Levites migrated south, and the northern priesthood became filled with people from other classes. Subsequent kings of Israel never departed from Jeroboam's apostasy. The children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam and did not depart from them, engaging in widespread idolatry, pagan religious practices such as causing their sons and daughters to pass through the fire, and rejection of God's statutes and covenant. Social injustice also became epidemic, with the righteous sold for silver and the poor oppressed. As a result, the Lord grew angry with Israel and removed them from His sight. The king of Assyria besieged Samaria for three years, took the city, and carried Israel away to Assyria, placing the people in Halah, by the Habor, the River of Gozan, and the cities of the Medes. About 250 years after its establishment, the ten-tribed northern kingdom became extinct as a sovereign nation. The Kingdom of Judah witnessed Israel's fall but followed the same course of idolatry and harlotry, defiling the land. God therefore determined to remove Judah from His sight as He had removed Israel. Nebuchadnezzar carried the people of Judah to Babylon in waves between 604 and 585 BC, destroying Jerusalem and the Temple. As national entities, both Israel and Judah became extinct, their peoples subject to Gentile rulers as punishment for inveterate apostasy. This double fall fulfilled the conditional promise of punishment outlined in Leviticus 26 for failure to obey God's commandments, yet it did not mean God reneged on His promises to the patriarchs or rendered meaningless the blessings bestowed on their sons.
