God requires an offering at each holy day observance so that no one appears before Him empty-handed, and this command inherently involves an element of sacrifice on the part of the giver. With that sacrifice there may also arise a fear of lacking sufficient resources afterward for personal needs. Proverbs illustrates that the one who scatters generously increases while the one who withholds unduly tends toward poverty, and the generous soul is made rich, yet this principle extends beyond a mere business transaction or mathematical exchange of resources. In the New Covenant God elevates the responsibility to a spiritual level by requiring that each person give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity, because He loves a cheerful giver. Such generosity of spirit applies both physically and spiritually, for the one who sows bountifully reaps bountifully. God responds to this attitude by making all grace abound so that the giver always has all sufficiency in all things and an abundance for every good work. He supplies and multiplies the seed sown while increasing the fruits of righteousness, which are the fruits of the Spirit, thereby enabling further growth in love, joy, peace, and related qualities. The cheerful offering also produces thanksgiving to God among those benefited, causes them to glorify Him for the obedience of the confession to the gospel of Christ, and draws forth their prayers on behalf of the giver. This service therefore constitutes a test that demonstrates both liberality and faithfulness to the gospel, resulting in God receiving glory through the generous sharing with the saints and with all.
