Defining Logos (Part Two)

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

In the exploration of biblical language, another Greek word, *rhema* (G4487), is noted alongside *logos*. While *logos* is used in the New Testament phrase "Word of the Lord" 11 out of 13 times, *rhema* also appears in this context, though less frequently. Similarly, in the phrase "Word of God," *logos* dominates, appearing 38 out of 44 times, yet *rhema* is present as an alternative. The distinction between *rhema* and *logos* is subtle, akin to splitting hairs, but it indicates a nuanced variation in how the inspired words of God are conveyed in scripture.

God's Promises Are Sure!

'Personal' from John W. Ritenbaugh

The concept of *rhema* (G4487), as God's spoken word, underscores the certainty and power behind the prophecies related to the Feast of Trumpets. God's words, delivered through the prophets by His Holy Spirit, are not mere human inventions but carry the assurance of His reputation and power. These prophetic utterances, which include the events foreshadowed by Trumpets, are sure and trustworthy, guiding us toward the ultimate reality of Christ's return and our resurrection. Since the beginning of the world, as noted in Acts 3:21, God has been speaking of these events, embedding their significance in the foundational history recorded in Genesis and affirming their fulfillment through His inspired word.

The Awesome Cost of Salvation

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

The Greek word *rhema* (G4487), meaning the revealed word, carries profound significance in understanding God's purpose. By faith, we comprehend that the ages, or periods of time, were prepared by the revealed word of God. This indicates an unseen hand guiding the destiny of these periods in which mankind has lived. God is actively working out a purpose through what He has revealed, and those with faith see His hand directing the course of nations and individuals. This concept is encouraging and faith-building, as it shows that God is never far from the thoughts of a person of faith. Such a person, having the mystery of God's purpose revealed to them, begins to perceive God in everything that is happening, viewing life through His perspective due to the relationship and fellowship established with Him. When God calls us, one of the miracles He works by His Spirit is to grant insight into His movements in the history of men, enabling the Christian to recognize that the earth and all events are under God's control.
