The Gap Theory

Sermonette by John Reiss

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth, as stated in Genesis 1:1. However, Genesis 1:2 reveals a striking condition: the earth was without form and void, with darkness upon the face of the deep. This description suggests a state of chaos and desolation, captured by the Hebrew words tohu and bohu, which imply waste, confusion, formlessness, and an undistinguishable ruin. Tohu conveys a sense of desolation and chaos, while bohu indicates emptiness and void. The presence of darkness, defined by the Hebrew term choshek, further evokes misery, destruction, and obscurity. This chaotic state stands in contrast to the perfection associated with God's creative work. The notion that the earth became tohu and bohu, rather than being created as such, is supported by the translation of the word "was" in Genesis 1:2 as "became" in other scriptural contexts. Isaiah 45:18 reinforces this by declaring that the Lord did not create the earth in vain, using the same term tohu found in Genesis 1:2. Similarly, Jeremiah 4:23 describes the earth as without form and void, reflecting a condition of judgment and ruin, mirroring the construction in Genesis 1:2. The idea of a gap between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2 suggests an unknowable expanse of time during which the earth may have undergone significant transformation. This perspective posits that the initial creation was not marked by chaos, but rather, the earth became desolate and void at some point after its creation, aligning with the understanding that God's work is inherently perfect and not characterized by confusion or waste.
