Who Were Jannes and Jambres?
Sermonette by Charles WhitakerIn the fictionalized narrative of The Book of Jannes and Jambres, the brothers trace their lineage to their grandfather Pethor, identified as a priest of the Egyptian bull god Apis. This pedigree establishes their upbringing in Memphis as court magicians within a setting steeped in Egyptian religious practices, where they reside with their mother in a luxurious estate. Their descent from a priest of Apis frames their hedonistic lifestyle and determined resistance to the true God, evident in Jannes's refusal to repent despite supernatural warnings, leprosy, and clear recognition of Moses as God's servant. Jambres follows the same path after his brother's violent death, rejecting calls to turn from magic even after witnessing the Exodus judgments. This background of pagan allegiance through Apis illustrates the brothers' obstinate rebellion, which Paul in II Timothy 3 parallels with corrupt-minded individuals in the last days who resist the truth yet advance no further, their folly ultimately exposed as powerless before God's purposes.
