Four Warnings (Part One): Enter By the Narrow Gate

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus Christ delivers a stern warning to His disciples about the path they must choose, emphasizing the importance of entering by the narrow gate. He admonishes us to resist the human tendency to follow the crowd, to pursue what is popular or easy, rather than embracing the difficult and constrictive way of God. He illustrates this by contrasting two gates and two ways: the narrow gate and difficult way that lead to life, and the wide gate and broad way that lead to destruction. The narrow gate, allowing only one person at a time, requires effort and is inconvenient to find and pass through, while the way beyond it remains compressed and confining, yet it leads to eternal life. The wide gate, spacious and roomy, offers no friction and is easy to traverse, but it ultimately ends in ruin. Jesus urges His disciples to choose the narrow gate as the entry point to the Kingdom of God, a decision that sets the tone for their spiritual journey. This choice, often made in response to God's calling, marks the beginning of a continuing course along a difficult path. He emphasizes that the pressure and stress felt on this narrow way are signs of being on the correct path, unlike the ease of the broad way which aligns with the majority. The initial decision to enter through the narrow gate, followed by a life of sustained effort on the narrow way, validates the disciple's commitment to reaching the Kingdom of God. Jesus warns that the choices made, even seemingly small ones, carry eternal consequences, urging thoughtful and spiritual responses to ensure alignment with His way. Through this teaching, He makes it clear that the narrow and difficult path, though challenging, is the one that leads to eternal life in God's Kingdom. In contrast, the wide and easy path, driven by selfish human nature, results in destruction. Jesus stresses the importance of being diligent and wary of temptations that seek to pull disciples off this path, reminding them that following Him is not easy and requires readiness to face opposition and make sacrifices. The struggle to live God's way in a world of sin produces the character and holiness necessary to be part of the God Family, aligning disciples with the image of Christ. Thus, He encourages making the difficult choice to take the narrow way whenever faced with a decision, as it is the path to eternal life.
