The Miracles of Jesus Christ: Two Demon-Possessed Men Healed (Part Three)
Bible Study by Martin G. CollinsIn the miracle recorded in Matthew 8:28-34, Mark 5:1-20, and Luke 8:26-39, Jesus Christ commands unclean spirits to come out of two men. Demons must obey Jesus, though they resist and object, unwilling to abandon their victims. Christ, with His great power, could have forced them out immediately, but He exercises wise, gentle, and cautious concern for the men's ability to endure the exorcism. Addressing the men as if possessed by a single spirit, Jesus learns from the demon's response that his name is Legion, indicating he leads a company of demons. Mark notes that the swine, into which the demons enter after the exorcism, number about two thousand, suggesting the horrific plight of the men if each demon had its own personality, united under one will and purpose. Jesus does not send the demons into the swine but merely out of the men, allowing the demons to enter the swine by divine consent, after which the swine rush into the sea. The Bible records demonic powers entering only two animal species: the serpent, symbolizing deception and shrewdness, and the swine, symbolizing uncleanness, making swine an appropriate containment for unclean spirits. Significant changes occur in the men post-exorcism. First, they adopt a new posture of sitting and resting, contrasting their previous constant roaming among tombs and wilderness. Second, their attitude shifts from rejection to reverence for Christ, desiring to follow Him, though Jesus directs them to witness to others instead. Third, previously unclothed, they are now dressed, reflecting improved modesty and spiritual cleanness. Fourth, they regain sanity, their minds cleared of chaos and made orderly. Fifth, described as being in their right mind, they exhibit self-control, a stark contrast to their prior uncontrollable state under demonic influence. Jesus instructs the healed man to share his deliverance with those closest to him, serving as an example of God's grace.
