The Miracles of Jesus Christ: Exorcism in the Synagogue
Bible Study by Martin G. CollinsOn a busy day for Jesus, He teaches in the synagogue and performs an exorcism, casting out a demon from a man (Mark 1:21-28; Luke 4:31-37). This event showcases His authority over unclean spirits, as the demon, recognizing Him as the Holy One of God, cries out in fear before being silenced. Jesus commands the demon to hold its peace and leave, issuing a direct order backed by God's authority, and the spirit obeys in rage and anguish. The people in the synagogue are amazed and fearful, struck by the power of His command, questioning what new doctrine this is and spreading the news of His extraordinary act. Unlike contemporary methods that rely on prayers or chants, Jesus does not cajole or request but authoritatively expels the demon, demonstrating the undeniable power of God's Word.
Satan and the Holy Days
Sermonette by Cody FordSatan, as shown by scriptural examples, often intensifies attacks during periods of spiritual growth and near the Holy Days when God's work is being done. For many, it is a cause of anxiety to see what trials and temptations that Satan will stir up. Instead of bringing relaxation as the Holy Days approach, we might feel dread. During the days of Unleavened Bread, we are to get sin out of our lives and spiritually grow into a more mature part of the body. As Jesus was reaching the beginning of his ministry, Satan tempted him for forty days. To divide King David from God, he influenced him to take the census which brought a curse on David's kingdom. During Passover time in Luke 22, Satan went inside Judas for the betrayal, and that is one of the times in the Bible that shows the direct action during a Holy Day from the Adversary. However, when Satan increases our fear and anxiety, we are to rely on God as demonstrated in I Peter 5:7 by "casting our cares" upon the Lord. We are to remember all the times God has rescued us from trials and use that faith to steadfastly navigate through Satan's roadblocks.
