John's Feeding of the 5,000

Sermon/Bible Study by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

Those who serve God's work are worthy of honor and fair compensation, and Jesus Himself practiced this. Paul writes in I Timothy 5:17-18 that elders who rule well are counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in word and doctrine, because Scripture says not to muzzle an ox treading out the grain and that the laborer is worthy of his wages. Jesus put this principle into action in the feeding of the 5,000. The twelve disciples organized the crowd, carried the food, and served the people, and afterward twelve baskets of fragments remained, one for each disciple. This was their wages, paid abundantly in food for the service they had rendered. Nothing was wasted, and the surplus also served as provision for their continued work under Him. This fits Luke 6:38, where what is given returns in good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over. God recognizes labor done for Him and rewards His servants generously, with the same giving attitude the servant showed in his work.
