Tithing: Second Tithe
Bible Study by Martin G. CollinsGod, in His wisdom and mercy, provides for the financial needs of His people at the feasts by instructing us to set aside a second tenth of our increase, known as the second tithe. This tithe, saved by the individual each year, is an additional portion of our income designated for personal use during His festivals, ensuring we observe them properly with joy and abundance alongside our families. Biblical evidence for the second tithe is found in Deuteronomy, where Moses instructs Israel to bring their tithes to the place where God has put His name. This second tithe is distinct from the first tithe, which is the inheritance of the Levites, and is to be consumed by the individual Israelite at the designated place, not at home. The plural usage of tithes in Deuteronomy indicates more than one tithe, emphasizing that this second tithe is separate and specific for festival observance, to be eaten where God chooses to place His name, including by the Levites present there. The purpose of the second tithe is to enable God's people to enjoy the physical abundance He provides at the annual holy festivals. It is to be spent on whatever the heart desires that enhances the glorifying of God or adds joy to the feast, allowing us to worship Him and learn to reverence and fear Him in pleasing ways. This provision also enables many to help others observe the feasts. Regarding the tithe of the second tithe, the ministry of God's church has deemed it wise to request a tenth of the second tithe to be set aside and sent to the church office. This portion helps cover festival expenses such as meeting space, flowers, sound systems, brochures, and family day activities, as well as assists the needy to attend the Feast. This contribution is not a command from God but a request from the ministry, requiring the same giving attitude as with any other offering. Using God's tithes according to His specific instructions is essential, as they belong to Him. Borrowing from any of God's tithes is considered stealing from Him, bringing curses upon those who do so. In His infinite love, God has given us the means to worship Him and rejoice with His people at a place He has chosen, providing a wonderful blessing and opportunity to draw closer to Him.
