The Sixth Commandment

Bible Study by Martin G. Collins

God alone gives life (Genesis 2:7) and holds the right to end any life when He chooses (Job 1:21), so euthanasia and suicide are not permissible. Man may take life only when God specifically grants that authority, as when He commanded Saul to carry out judgment (I Samuel 15:1-3). The life God has given is not ours to take, and vengeance and the issuing of life and death belong to Him (Deuteronomy 32:35, 39). No biblical example shows a godly person taking another's life or his own with God's approval in an act of euthanasia or suicide. The sixth commandment protects every human being, made in God's image, from having life cut short by another human hand. At the same time, God does not require us to use drugs or machines to force loved ones to live as long as possible, contrary to nature, even when they are in great pain or totally unconscious. Prolonging life by artificial means is not commanded, but actively ending it is forbidden.
