The Parables of Matthew 13 (Part Nine): The Parable of the Householder
Bible Study by Martin G. CollinsIn the Parable of the Householder, found in Matthew 13:51-52, Jesus concludes His series of parables by illustrating the responsibilities of His disciples as scribes instructed in the Kingdom of Heaven. The householder represents the true minister, tasked with feeding the household of faith. Our Savior portrays this minister as having a rich, inspired storehouse of essential spiritual treasures from which to draw in fulfilling his duties. The scribe, likened to a householder, is both a student and a teacher, continuously learning to effectively teach. As the master of the house, the householder holds great authority and responsibility over his household, making decisions for its benefit. In the context of church government, the minister is commissioned as an authoritative teacher of Holy Scripture, equipped to preach the gospel, equip the saints, and help bring people to the fullness of Christ. The householder's treasure refers to a storehouse of resources, including knowledge and experience from studying God's truth and living His way. This treasure enables the minister to lead and provide for his spiritual family. The new and old from this treasure signify a balanced approach to teaching, mixing established truths with fresh insights, akin to serving both old and new food from a storeroom. Jesus desires His ministers to carefully balance teachings from the Old and New Testaments, ensuring neither is wasted, to enrich their spiritual families with the wisdom they have received from Him.
Stewardship
Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughA steward is responsible for the supervision or managing of something entrusted into his care by a superior. As God's stewards, have been entrusted with much.
Parables of Matthew 13 (Part 3): Hidden Treasure
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughThe church constitutes Christ's treasure, hidden in the world, purchased and redeemed with Christ's blood. The Pearl of Great Price depicts a rich merchant (Christ), the only one who had the means to redeem His church. The Dragnet symbolizes the scope of God's calling while the separation process indicates God's high standards of selection, indicating a time of righteous and impartial judgment. The Householder parable shows the responsibility of the ministry to be authoritative interpreters of scripture, using what they have learned and experienced to instruct the people.

Matthew (Part Twenty-Eight)
Sermon/Bible Study by John W. RitenbaughWhen God gives a responsibility, He gives all the tools to carry it out and the freedom to decide how to do it. He wants to see how we do with what He gives.
