Do Not Be Afraid!
'Ready Answer' by Ted E. BowlingOur great God is mindful of even the smallest sparrow, a bird so insignificant and vulnerable, yet nothing escapes His attention. Jesus teaches in Matthew 10:29-31 and Luke 12:6-7 that not one sparrow is forgotten before God, and not one falls to the ground apart from His will. Though sparrows are of little value, sold for mere copper coins in ancient markets, and even given away as worthless extras, God notices each one. This same watchful care extends to us, as Jesus reassures that the very hairs of our heads are numbered, showing how deeply God knows and loves us despite our own insignificance. He has chosen us, the weak and base, out of obscurity, not for any special skills or stature, but by His sovereign purpose. Throughout our lives, God watches over us, refining and sanctifying us, never distant or uncaring. As Jesus affirms in Luke 12:32, it is our Father's good pleasure to give us the kingdom, and He will never leave nor forsake us, for in His eyes, we are worth far more than many sparrows.
The Poor in Spirit
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughGod's attention is drawn to those who embody a humble and contrite spirit. He looks upon the one who is poor in spirit, recognizing their complete spiritual destitution and dependence on Him for sustenance. Such a person is rare, characterized by a profound realization of their nothingness before God, showing remorse for their sins, and trembling at His Word with deep reverence. This attitude of humility, marked by a broken heart and a crushed spirit, impresses God because it mirrors the disposition of Jesus Christ, who exemplified lowliness and submission. God promises to dwell with those who possess this contrite and humble spirit, reviving and preserving them, while He remains at odds with the wicked who lack such humility. To God, the works of man are feeble compared to His infinite power, but He values the heart that acknowledges its need for Him above all else, granting peace and salvation to those who prioritize Him as the center of their lives.
The Isaiah 58 Puzzle
Sermonette by David C. GrabbeIsaiah 58 is like the foreground of a picture puzzle. But it only really becomes clear when we add the background—the edge pieces—found elsewhere.
His Eye Is on the Sparrow (Part Two)
Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)God's attention is meticulously focused on His creation and purpose, ensuring that every detail of His plan for salvation is carried out with precision. He is constantly working out His purpose, never growing weary or sleeping, and remains deeply involved in the lives of those He has called. Despite the challenges presented by Satan, God's oversight is unwavering, providing protection and guidance to His people. He is aware of even the smallest aspects of His creation, as illustrated by His care for the sparrow, a seemingly insignificant bird, demonstrating that no detail escapes His notice. In comparison to the sparrow, the church, though weak and unnoticed by the world, receives God's profound attention and care. He personally singles out individuals to hear and understand His will, ensuring that nothing happens randomly and that His control is always exercised. God's loving choice and careful watch over His creation mean that He is always paying attention, even when it may seem otherwise, guiding His children with purpose toward His Kingdom.
