The flesh, rendered from the Greek word sarx, encompasses all human thoughts, feelings, desires, and activities apart from God. This raw human nature originates from the choice in the Garden of Eden, where Adam and Eve rejected the Tree of Life and selected the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, resulting in mankind being cut off from divine influence. Consequently, every person inherits a fleshly condition marked by appetites that demand satisfaction, compounded by the influence of Satan the Devil and the corrupt world system he has shaped. These elements produce habitual works of the flesh, including adultery, fornication, uncleanness, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and similar behaviors. Such practices arise naturally when the flesh remains unchecked, as it was before conversion, leaving individuals dead in trespasses and sins while fulfilling the lusts of the flesh and mind. The flesh stands in direct opposition to the Spirit of God, creating an unrelenting conflict in which each seeks to direct conduct. Those who practice the works of the flesh reap corruption and will not inherit the Kingdom of God. Even after calling, the flesh continues to exert pressure through daily temptations amplified by a sex-crazed, wealth-driven culture. Overcoming requires deliberate crucifixion of the flesh with its passions and desires, achieved by walking in the Spirit so that its influence fills the life and prevents fulfillment of fleshly lusts. This choice between the flesh and the Spirit must be renewed continually, as the two remain diametrically opposed with no common ground.
