Who Was the Samaritan Woman at the Well?
Sermon by Ted E. BowlingIn the journey through Samaria, Jesus Christ came to a city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. There, Jacob's well stood as a significant landmark. Jesus, wearied from His journey, sat by the well at about noon, the sixth hour. It was at this well that He initiated a profound conversation with a Samaritan woman who came to draw water, breaking cultural boundaries by asking her for a drink. The well, tied to the heritage of Jacob, became the setting for a deeper dialogue about living water. The woman questioned Jesus, asking if He was greater than their father Jacob, who gave them the well and drank from it himself, along with his sons and livestock. Jesus responded that whoever drinks of the water from this well will thirst again, but the water He offers will become a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life. This encounter at Jacob's well, a place of historical and spiritual significance near the ancient city of Shechem, was no coincidence. It was here, where God first appeared to Abram with promises of land and where Jacob lived and built the well, that Jesus chose to reveal Himself as the Messiah to a Gentile woman. This location, still existing today, also marks the burial site of Joseph's bones and the place of blessings and cursings between Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal. Jesus had a purpose in being at Jacob's well, fulfilling His Father's will by bringing hope of salvation to the Samaritans.

John (Part Eight)
Sermon/Bible Study by John W. RitenbaughThe woman of Samaria is like each of us, initially hardened, self-willed and skeptical when called, but afterwards zealous when enlightened by the truth.
