Time to Hunt

Sermonette by Ronny H. Graham

Hunters and warriors have a positive niche in the scriptures. God Almighty and Jesus Christ are described with hunter and warrior imagery.

Does God Allow the Hunting and Killing of Animals?

Bible Questions & Answers

Hunting is not against God's will. He gave man dominion over the fish, birds, and beasts at creation (Genesis 1:28), and after the Flood He gave mankind permission to kill animals for food (Genesis 9:2-3). He ordained a sacrificial system in which millions of animals died, and He inspired Scripture to name which animals, fish, and fowl are fit to eat, game animals included (Leviticus 11; Deuteronomy 14:3-21). If killing animals were wrong, He would simply have forbidden eating any of them rather than telling man which to eat. Killing predators is also acceptable, as when David killed a lion and a bear that threatened his sheep (I Samuel 17:34-36). Jesus' fishermen disciples caught fish, and He helped them do so (Luke 5:1-9). Hunting must not be indiscriminate or reckless, however. Killing an animal merely for its antlers or horns and leaving the carcass to rot is repulsive and wrong. The humane culling of herds of deer, bison, and similar animals is necessary and merciful conservation of nature. The idea that killing any animal at all is wrong finds no support in the Bible.
