Preparing Your Heart

Sermon by John O. Reid

The heart represents the core of who we are, encompassing our thoughts, emotions, and actions. It is the seat of our being, directing how we conduct our lives. Strengthening the heart spiritually is of utmost importance, as it is the focus of Jesus Christ's examination of us. He seeks a transformation in our very nature to reflect Him completely, which is the essence of our calling. To prepare our hearts to serve God, we must set a plan to control our minds and be obedient to all His instructions. Preparing implies planning and effort, much like building a home requires a blueprint and resources. We cannot remain passive, hoping for change without action. Instead, we must actively labor to bring about this transformation, becoming servants who work for Jesus Christ. Serving God requires us to put away laziness, wrong habits, and anything contrary to the character He desires in us. We must direct our hearts to Him alone, humbly obeying His laws and intents. This call to prepare our hearts applies to every individual, emphasizing a personal relationship with God over collective affiliation. The first step in strengthening the heart is repentance. We must humble ourselves deeply, acknowledging and turning from wrong attitudes, laxness in obedience, and any disrespect or competitive spirit within us. Only through sincere repentance can we beseech God to accept us again as His obedient children. The second step is diligent study of God's Word. We are to apply ourselves with energy and effort, not relying solely on others to teach us. Studying equips us to rightly divide His truth, applying His principles correctly in every circumstance. It is a proactive pursuit, essential for growth and readiness to serve in the roles God has prepared for us. Serving God also means loving Him with every fiber of our being and loving our neighbors as ourselves. This daily obedience produces godly character, which cannot be gained through mere knowledge or casual effort. It comes from drawing close to Him in prayer, fasting, and study, and by putting His words into practice in our lives. As stewards of God's calling, we must be faithful and diligent. We are to be devoted to our Master's service, faithful to the trust given to us, and unconcerned with worldly opinions, seeking only His approval. Our worth as servants is proven by the results of our labors, and we must strive to represent Him without bringing shame to His Name. Strengthening our hearts involves trusting God through trials, recognizing that He designs specific challenges to bring us to salvation. As He is faithful to us, we must respond with faithful hearts, serving Him with love and obedience to all His laws. By cooperating with Him through repentance, learning, and action, we prepare our hearts to serve Him fully.

Overcoming the Leaven of Fear

Sermonette by David F. Maas

God's people should not allow their hearts to be troubled, thereby permitting a cringing cowardice to destroy them. Leaven is an apt metaphor to describe fear.

The Greatness of God's Power

Sermon by Martin G. Collins

True power belongs to God alone, and His strength is the source of all ability. His power is evident in creation, sustenance of the world, and mighty acts of salvation. When God delegates authority to human beings, it provides a certain power to care for and use the earth, yet He often intervenes with miraculous works of deliverance. In the spiritual realm, Christ, having all authority from His Father, used it to forgive sins and cast out evil spirits, and He grants authority to His disciples to share in His work. The greatest demonstration of His power is in individual calling and conversion, transforming lives through the power of His Spirit. The apostle Paul emphasizes the immeasurable greatness of God's power working in believers, as seen in Ephesians 1. He prays for the Ephesians to know this exceeding greatness, which surpasses human comprehension and expression. This power is not static but kinetic, an energy that overcomes all resistance and conquers every obstacle. It is the energy of God's might, limitless and infinite, actively working in believers to accomplish His purpose. Paul illustrates this with the resurrection of Christ, showing that even the last enemy, death, is defeated by God's unconquerable power. To advance spiritual strengthening of the heart, several principles are vital. First, dependence on God is essential, as seen in David's reliance on Him during crises. Second, the joy of God transforms sorrow into strength, grounded in faith in His Word. Third, prayer aligned with God's Word provides strength to endure pressures and magnify His truth. Fourth, gaining wisdom fortifies the heart, enabling one to face life's challenges without fear. Fifth, quietness and confidence in God foster a calm strength of purpose and active faith. Sixth, waiting on God with patience allows His goodness to sustain and renew. Finally, dependence on God's grace, as exemplified by Paul, reveals that divine power is best shown in human weakness, providing sufficient strength to overcome any hindrance. God's power, working within, molds, guides, and leads believers, ensuring that no obstacle can prevent the fulfillment of His purpose.

Facing Cultural Headwinds

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

As the world turns against us with cultural headwinds that challenge our morality and commitment to God, we must strengthen our hearts with courage. The concept of courage, often linked to the heart in biblical language, is vital for enduring opposition. We are called to face these forces with spiritual, mental, and emotional strength, trusting in God's promises as our foundation. God instructs us to be strong and very courageous, assuring us of success in inheriting our spiritual promised land. His promises eliminate anxiety, providing confidence and boldness to follow Him without fear. He goes before us, fights our battles, and secures our inheritance, ensuring that no enemy can withstand His power. We are to trust in His presence, knowing He will never forsake us, and commit ourselves to His righteous judgment. To strengthen our hearts, we must obey God's commands without deviation, keeping His Word central in our speech and actions. We are to meditate on His ways, applying them practically, and remain positive, undeterred by fear or discouragement. This steadfast hope propels us forward, focused on our eternal union with Christ, undaunted by present challenges. Strengthening our hearts also involves mutual encouragement among believers, maintaining confidence, and boldly living out God's way. We are to surge ahead with faith, trusting that God will not leave us, and strive to grow in character, witnessing to the world and glorifying Him. By recommitting to His path and refusing to be ashamed of the gospel, we counter cultural pressures with unwavering resolve. Our conduct must consistently reflect Christ-like righteousness in every situation, avoiding hypocrisy and compromise. We are to hold fast, remaining strong and courageous, enduring to the end with the assurance of God's promises and the power of His gospel sustaining us.

James and Unleavened Bread (Part Three)

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

James had to be written as a counterbalance to antinomian elements that twisted Paul's writings to proclaim that that grace nullifies the need for works.

The Commandments (Part Fourteen)

Sermon/Bible Study by John W. Ritenbaugh

Many biblical examples illustrate that when the leader put his faith in God and submitted himself to God's rule, God supernaturally protected His people.
