The rudiments of the world, appearing in Colossians 2:8 and 2:20, refer to the demonic powers that shape and define this present cosmos. In Colossae, these powers drove pagan, ascetic philosophies teaching that perfection came through self-denial, severity, and abstinence. Some members imposed these humanly devised regulations, such as "do not touch, do not taste, do not handle," as though required for salvation. Paul warns believers against such empty deceit, rooted in the traditions of men and these worldly principles rather than in Christ. These same spiritual powers repeatedly prompt mankind toward vain deceits and Gnostic myths, blinding human messengers to truth. Believers, complete in Christ, who triumphed over all principalities, need not fear ascetic condemnation of their joyful Sabbath and festival observance.
