Corporate Sin
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughCompromising with sin occurs when individuals join larger groups in evil actions rather than resisting. This begins at the worldwide level where every intent of the heart turns continually evil as before the Flood. It continues at the national level when a people adopts the statutes of surrounding nations and rejects the commandments of God leading to captivity. It appears at the ethnic level when prejudice against another group such as Samaritans arises from upbringing and tradition. It surfaces within families when brothers conspire against one another for gain or when a husband and wife collude to withhold truth. It reaches the smallest unit when one spouse yields to the other in wrongdoing. Even within church groups compromise arises when members tolerate false doctrines rather than purging them. God judges each person individually according to deeds so that participation in corporate sin still places personal guilt on the one who consents. Therefore the command remains to purge malice and wickedness replacing them with sincerity and truth while refusing the broad way that leads to destruction.
