Joseph's Extraordinary Example

Sermon by Kim Myers

Joseph, the son of Jacob, stands as a prophetic forerunner and shadow of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Both Christ and Joseph were deeply loved by their fathers; Christ by His Father, God, and Joseph by Jacob, who favored him among his siblings. Each was hated by their brothers, with Christ facing the hostility of the Jews who sought to kill Him, and Joseph enduring the murderous intent of his own siblings due to their envy of his dreams and his father's favor. Both were sent to their brothers, as Israel sent Joseph to check on his siblings, mirroring Christ's mission to His people. Christ and Joseph each went into the earth and emerged again; Christ rose from His tomb, while Joseph was pulled from the pit where his brothers had cast him. Both were stripped of their tunics, symbolizing their humiliation. Christ willingly became a servant, whereas Joseph was forced into slavery by his brothers' betrayal. Christ served the two criminals crucified with Him through His death and resurrection, just as Joseph served the chief butler and baker by tending to their needs. Joseph provided physical life to his family, the Egyptians, and many others by saving them from starvation, paralleling Christ's spiritual salvation. Neither was recognized by their own; Joseph's family did not know him upon reunion, just as the Jews failed to recognize Christ despite the prophecies. Through severe trials, Joseph forgave his brothers, reflecting the forgiveness Christ extends to all, demonstrating a heart aligned with God's will even after enduring betrayal and suffering.
