America the Great
CGG Weekly by David C. GrabbeGod uses the term "great" to describe an adulterous capital city, and by extension the rest of the unfaithful nation, ten times in the book of Revelation. Greatness, however, is not synonymous with goodness. America has grown great indeed and could very well be called the greatest nation. Yet, this is not a greatness of which to be proud. Despite the many blessings from God, including providence, a Judeo-Christian ethic in the Constitution, and abundant natural resources, the nation has failed to live up to its potential to glorify Him. Instead, this greatness becomes a liability as spiritual exhaustion sets in, marking a decline in the moral fabric of the society. Though wealth, power, resources, and technology have contributed to this greatness, it is all for naught unless the nation also becomes good.
The Beast and Babylon (Part Five): The Great Harlot
'Personal' from John W. RitenbaughGod acknowledges that Jerusalem, representing all Israel, is a great city. She is truly great in political, economic, and military power. So great is her influence that in all the world, only she is able to hold the Beast in check and make it pretty much do her bidding until God's time comes for Israel to be humbled. Unfortunately, her power is not pure because she is also great in whoredoms, in religious confusion, and in deviance from her responsibility to God. The scope of her influence is wide-ranging, over many nations, as she sits in authority, giving orders and being served. God sees this great city in end-time prophecy as one powerful and influential people, contrasted to the Beast, which consists of many diverse peoples who cannot combine and coordinate their strengths to counterbalance and perhaps overcome the more united Woman.
The Beast and Babylon (Part Eight): God, Israel, and the Bible
'Personal' from John W. RitenbaughThe Great Harlot, identified as Israel, holds a central role in the biblical narrative, with God's purpose and relationship focused on this nation and the church. Despite being divorced by God, He continues a fractious relationship with Israel to fulfill His promises to Abraham and to complete end-time prophecies. Israel has earned the title of the Great Harlot Babylon through her faithless conduct and covenant-breaking with God, outdoing even the Gentiles in her worldly ways. In Revelation 17 and 18, God describes end-time Israel as having a close relationship with the Beast, exerting significant influence, particularly through the Joseph tribes of America and Britain, with America possibly being the primary focus due to its dominant influence. Israel's rebellion against her responsibilities is evident as she has embraced the world's ways, becoming Babylon the Great. Her spiritual sin is most frequently demonstrated through gross idolatry, serving herself and following fleeting whims rather than remaining faithful to her divine Husband. Despite her great advantages, Israel has become just another kingdom of this world, maintaining a hypocritical stance as God's people while living surrounded by Babylon the Great. Revelation 17 portrays the Great Harlot adorned in purple and scarlet, with gold, precious stones, and pearls, illustrating her immense wealth and power among nations. As the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the Israelitish people have grown to control a significant portion of the world's wealth at their peak, wielding unmatched influence to guide or persuade others. Yet, this material greatness is matched by spiritual immorality, confusion, and deviance from responsibility, polluting her influence to such an extent that only she can hold the Beast in check until God's appointed time. The Great Harlot sits on many waters, the Beast, and seven mountains, symbolizing her authority over peoples, multitudes, nations, and tongues. This position of prominence allows her to teach, guide, or coerce many nations worldwide, showcasing her vast powers. The Bible depicts her as one unified people, in contrast to the diverse Beast, suggesting that God views all of Israel in intimate association with the Beast, supporting and controlling it through political, trade, and military ties, especially evident in the Joseph tribes of America and the United Kingdom. Historically, Israel's rise to dominance was marked by significant events, altering the course of history and leading to political, economic, and military greatness. Despite this, her arrogance and self-absorption with pleasure blind her to the underlying cancer of immorality and false spirituality, setting the stage for God's judgment. The blood of the saints already stains Israel's history, and more will be added to her despicable record in the near future.
The Two Witnesses (Part Seven)
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughChrist's Two Witnesses will accomplished their work before the Beast kills them. Humanity will feel relief at their death, but stark terror at their resurrection.
