Let There Be Light
Commentary by Martin G. CollinsOn the fourth day of creation, God placed lights in the heavens for signs and seasons, to mark days, years, and the appointed times of His feasts. The greater light, the sun, serves as the primary source of natural light, while the lesser light, the moon, complements it. The immense universe, represented by the stars, is also created by God, though mentioned briefly. These lights govern time and provide illumination upon the earth, continuing and completing the work of the first day by dividing light and darkness, or day and night. The term "made" indicates that God fashioned or worked on these lights, ordaining the sun and moon to define the passing of time according to His purposes. The references to seasons, days, and years highlight their role in God's sacred calendar. These lights serve as the great natural timepiece of mankind, marking divisions of time for agricultural, social, civil, and sacred purposes, as well as signifying place and the cycles of human history and natural science.
