- Deuteronomy 9:1-6
“Hear, O Israel: You are to cross over the Jordan today, and go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fortified up to heaven, a people great and tall, the descendants of the Anakim, whom you know, and of whom you heard it said, ‘Who can stand before the descendants of Anak?’ Therefore understand today that the LORD your God is He who goes over before you as a consuming fire. He will destroy them and bring them down before you; so you shall drive them out and destroy them quickly, as the LORD has said to you. “Do not think in your heart, after the LORD your God has cast them out before you, saying, ‘Because of my righteousness the LORD has brought me in to possess this land’; but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD is driving them out from before you. It is not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart that you go in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD your God drives them out from before you, and that He may fulfill the word which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Therefore understand that the LORD your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stiff-necked people.

After this it happened that Absalom provided himself with chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him. Now Absalom would rise early and stand beside the way to the gate. So it was, whenever anyone who had a lawsuit came to the king for a decision, that Absalom would call to him and say, “What city are you from?” And he would say, “Your servant is from such and such a tribe of Israel.” Then Absalom would say to him, “Look, your case is good and right; but there is no deputy of the king to hear you.” Moreover Absalom would say, “Oh, that I were made judge in the land, and everyone who has any suit or cause would come to me; then I would give him justice.” And so it was, whenever anyone came near to bow down to him, that he would put out his hand and take him and kiss him. In this manner Absalom acted toward all Israel who came to the king for judgment. So Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.

And caused the dawn to know its place, That it might take hold of the ends of the earth,
And the wicked be shaken out of it? It takes on form like clay under a seal,
And stands out like a garment. From the wicked their light is withheld,
And the upraised arm is broken. “Have you entered the springs of the sea?
Or have you walked in search of the depths? Have the gates of death been revealed to you?
Or have you seen the doors of the shadow of death? Have you comprehended the breadth of the earth?
Tell Me, if you know all this. “ Where is the way to the dwelling of light?
And darkness, where is its place, That you may take it to its territory,
That you may know the paths to its home? Do you know it, because you were born then,
Or because the number of your days is great? “Have you entered the treasury of snow,
Or have you seen the treasury of hail, Which I have reserved for the time of trouble,
For the day of battle and war? By what way is light diffused,
Or the east wind scattered over the earth? “Who has divided a channel for the overflowing water,
Or a path for the thunderbolt, To cause it to rain on a land where there is no one,
A wilderness in which there is no man; To satisfy the desolate waste,
And cause to spring forth the growth of tender grass? Has the rain a father?
Or who has begotten the drops of dew? From whose womb comes the ice?
And the frost of heaven, who gives it birth? The waters harden like stone,
And the surface of the deep is frozen. “Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades,
Or loose the belt of Orion? Can you bring out Mazzaroth in its season?
Or can you guide the Great Bear with its cubs? Do you know the ordinances of the heavens?
Can you set their dominion over the earth?

Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
