Because of the tendency of human nature to justify sin, we must soberly reflect upon the enormous cost of Christ's sacrifice, demonstrating God's unfathomable compassion and mercy. We have an obligation to emulate this trait of godly mercy in our relationships with other people, friend and foe alike, developing the mindset of a humble servant in the manner of Jesus Christ. The symbolism of the components of a typical Passover service include: (1) foot washing (preparing ourselves for the role or mindset of a humble servant), (2) the breaking and partaking of the bread (representing fellowship and communion with the body of Christ), and (3) the partaking of the wine (representing Christ's shedding of blood as a sacrifice redeeming us from the enormity of our collective sins). Christ's final instructions for His disciples, fortifying them for tumultuous events that would soon follow, provide perennial solace and strength (with the promise of God's Holy Spirit) for all who have yielded to, and have committed themselves to this covenant.
