Joseph: A Saga of Excellence (Part Two)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

Joseph, at seventeen, was already a central figure in his family, marked by his father Jacob's favoritism, which bred deep resentment among his brothers. This tension was intensified by Joseph's dreams, as recorded in Genesis 37:5-11. In the first dream, Joseph saw his sheaf standing upright while his brothers' sheaves bowed down to his, prompting their scornful question of whether he would reign over them. Their hatred grew even more for his dreams and words. In a second dream, the sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed to him, symbolizing his family's submission, which led to further envy from his brothers and a rebuke from Jacob, though Jacob kept the matter in mind, pondering its significance. These dreams, though not interpreted by Joseph himself, fueled the rivalry and animosity, pointing to his future supremacy and stirring intense feelings of envy among his siblings. The doubling of the dreams, as later understood by Joseph in Genesis 41:32, signified that the matter was established by God and would soon come to pass, emphasizing the certainty and urgency of the events foretold.
