The Vinedresser
CGG Weekly by Clyde FinkleaDuring His Passover instructions to His disciples, Jesus illustrates how God, as the Vinedresser, works with us to produce fruit in our lives. God the Father, as the keeper of the vineyard, cultivates each branch with love to ensure it bears as much fruit as possible for our ultimate good. When branches bear no fruit, the Vinedresser does not cut them off but lifts them up, an action reflecting care and support rather than removal. This lifting up is akin to divine discipline, as a loving parent corrects a child, designed to reposition us to produce fruit again. The Vinedresser employs three degrees of discipline to encourage fruitfulness. First, He rebukes us with strong warnings, pricking our consciences through various means. Second, if we do not respond, He chastens us, bringing feelings of anxiety or distress through increased pressures in life. Third, He scourges us with intensified challenges, such as severe illness or significant loss, to awaken us from spiritual lethargy and guide us back to fruitfulness. In contrast, when branches are fruitful, the Vinedresser prunes them, a painful yet necessary process to increase their yield of godly fruit. This pruning, though it may feel like punishment, is a sign of His desire for us to bear more fruit. Through these actions, God is glorified as we bear much fruit and live as true disciples, fulfilling the purpose for which He chose and appointed us.
