The Purpose of the Sabbath

Sermonette by Craig Sablich

The Sabbath enables us to learn spiritual principles rather than a set of rules, and to exercise righteous judgment, aligning our actions with God's purpose.

Sabbathkeeping (Part 4)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

The Sabbath was made for mankind, designed to serve humanity and align with God's purpose. It is not merely for a specific group, but for all people, as God intended it to be a universal sign between Him and His children. This sign is not just in its observance, but in the manner it is kept, reflecting a relationship with Him as the Creator and Savior. God designated the Sabbath as holy, a time set apart for worship and service to Him, emphasizing its unique importance over any other day. The purpose of the Sabbath extends beyond creation, connecting also to redemption, symbolizing liberty and release from slavery, as well as the preservation of a relationship with the Redeemer. It is a day appointed by God to memorialize His act of setting us free and maintaining our liberty, ensuring that our bond with Him is preserved through its observance. No other day can fulfill this role, as it uniquely signifies both His creative power and saving grace. God expects the Sabbath to be held honorable, a day of joy and delight, reflecting respect for His designation. It is to be a time to honor Him by pursuing His pleasure, will, and preferences rather than our own daily desires. The focus is not on the amount of energy expended, but on the purpose and intent behind actions taken on this holy time. God's concern lies in what we do and why we do it during the Sabbath, prioritizing the intent over mere physical activity. The Sabbath is intended to be a liberating delight, fostering right relationships with God and fellow man. It should not be seen as a burden, for to consider it so is to view God Himself as a burden. Instead, it is a day to be cherished, used to glorify and praise Him through our actions and attitudes. God provides broad principles and examples rather than specific rules, expecting us to make righteous judgments in various circumstances that may arise on the Sabbath.

The Commandments (Part Six)

Sermon/Bible Study by John W. Ritenbaugh

God gave the Sabbath to His people so they can know Him intimately. Idolatry, scattering, and captivity are the natural consequences of Sabbath-breaking.

The Fourth Commandment (Part 2)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

The Sabbath reminds us that God is Creator and that we were once in slavery to sin. The Sabbath is a time of blessing, deliverance, liberty, and redemption.

The Commandments (Part Nine)

Sermon/Bible Study by John W. Ritenbaugh

Benign neglect of the Sabbath covenant can incrementally lead us into idolatry. We must treat this holy time as different from the other days of the week.

Whatsoever Your Heart Desires

Sermonette by Mark Schindler

We must not construe the term, "whatever our heart desires," as a pass to sin, but we should use every occasion to grow in thinking and acting like God.

Pentecost and Time

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

Because of our 'time-bound' state, unless we sync with God's timetable, we are squandering our God-given time to become members of His family.
