Grieving the Holy Spirit

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

Grieving or resisting the Holy Spirit is a serious matter for those who have a covenant relationship with God. In Ephesians 4:30, Paul admonishes believers not to grieve the Holy Spirit of God, emphasizing that this Spirit is holy because it belongs to God Himself. This grieving occurs when God's children engage in sins such as lying, wrath, stealing, and corrupt communication, which cause sorrow to God, who cannot bear to look upon sin in any form. These actions, even those deemed minor, are significant to Him because of His holiness, and they bring Him grief, frustration, and sadness as He desires the best for His children. Under the New Covenant, only those who have made a covenant with God and possess His Spirit can truly grieve the Holy Spirit, as they are the ones in whom Christ lives and whose bodies are temples of God's Spirit. This is distinct from the unconverted, who are currently alienated from God and thus not in a position to grieve His Spirit, as He is not actively working with them at this time. Historically, as seen in Isaiah 63:10, Israel grieved God's Holy Spirit through rebellion against His commands, disappointing Him repeatedly despite their covenant relationship. In Acts 7:51, Stephen accuses the religious leaders of resisting the Holy Spirit, mirroring the rebellion of their ancestors. This resistance is the action that causes God's grief, showing the human response that provokes a divine reaction. Similarly, in Acts 5:3-9, Ananias and Sapphira are said to have lied to the Holy Spirit, which Peter equates with lying to God, reinforcing that the Spirit is God's essence, not a separate entity. Their act of testing the Spirit of the Lord parallels Israel's testing of God in the wilderness, resulting in severe consequences. Further, in I Thessalonians 5:19, Paul warns against quenching the Holy Spirit, which involves actively suppressing or stifling its influence. This deliberate resistance prevents the Spirit from working within, allowing one's own spirit to dominate and potentially leading to an inability to perceive the Spirit's promptings over time. The most severe consequence of resisting the Holy Spirit is highlighted in Hebrews 10:26-29, where willfully returning to sin after receiving grace is described as treating the blood of Christ as common, gravely offending God, who is the Spirit of grace. This ultimate rejection can lead to an unpardonable state, a dire warning against even beginning to grieve or resist the Spirit. Paul's intent in these teachings is to urge believers to put off the old man and put on the new, walking and living in God's Spirit, as expressed in Galatians 5. The call is to avoid any action that would cause God sorrow or frustration, instead striving to please Him and make Him proud as His sons and daughters.

What Is Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit?

'Ready Answer' by David C. Grabbe

The Bible highlights various forms of opposition to the Holy Spirit, short of willful blasphemy. Ephesians 4:20 speaks of grieving the Holy Spirit, while Acts 7:51 mentions resisting the Holy Spirit. Additionally, I Thessalonians 5:19 warns against quenching the Spirit. These actions reflect some level of opposition to the outworking, power, and fundamental nature of God. Such resistance can manifest in daily conduct, showing a refusal to align with God's will and a disregard for His presence and guidance.
