The Ten Commandments
Bible Study by Martin G. CollinsThe spiritual law of God, including the Ten Commandments, is an eternal and inexorable force, always in effect since creation. These commandments are not merely suggestions or rituals but the very code of conduct of our God, binding on all humanity before, during, and after the time of Moses and Jesus Christ. When we keep them, God blesses us; when we do not, we incur their penalty. A commandment is a specific, divine instruction from God that we are to obey forever, establishing original law without precedents. Law defines sin, and since sin has existed from the beginning with Adam, God must have given His law, including the Ten Commandments, as the basic law of His Kingdom. Breaking any of these commandments was considered sin even before Moses' time, as evidenced by the actions of individuals in early history. Abraham, the father of the faithful, kept the commandments, as did David, a man after God's own heart, who was deeply concerned with obeying them. Jesus Christ Himself kept the Ten Commandments and taught others to do the same, emphasizing that keeping them is essential to entering eternal life. The apostles, including Paul, frequently mentioned the commandments in their writings, summarizing the last six as a way to love our neighbor and affirming that violating any, including the first four that show love toward God, is sin. A sign of God's true church is the keeping of the Ten Commandments, and any church that does not teach and keep them is not of God. Love does not nullify these commandments; rather, by keeping them, the love of God is perfected in us. Even after the Millennium, when New Jerusalem is established, no lawbreaker will be allowed in the city, proving that obedience to God's law, reflecting His holy conduct, will remain the standard for all eternity.
