The Day of Atonement's three commands—afflicting the soul, doing no work, and keeping a Sabbath of solemn rest—teach profound spiritual truths. Abstaining from work points to salvation as God's work, accomplished entirely through Christ's atoning sacrifice and His removal of sin. Fasting, or afflicting the soul, calls us to humility, dependence, and genuine repentance. Isaiah 57-58 shows that true fasting is not outward ritual but inner transformation: breaking sinful patterns, seeking reconciliation with God, and preparing to serve others selflessly. As Matthew 6 teaches, fasting is directed toward the Father, not human recognition. Properly observed, Atonement fasting reminds us that salvation is God's gift, develops Christlike character, and prepares us for a life of service in His coming Kingdom.
