Jesus Christ, beginning with Pentecost 31 A.D., purposely called His saints into an assembly or church in order to 1) share the gospel, teaching His commandments and truths to a people who would respond to them, 2) aid those whom the Father called, His firstfruits, during their time of sanctification, and 3) teach them to become ambassadors, serving as a living example to God's glory. God has never left His Church unattended, as is seen in the commendations and corrections of the Seven Churches in Revelation 2-3, intended for all God's people. Christ, the Good Shepherd, did not threaten to remove the candlestick of the Laodicean Church, as He did the people of the Ephesian congregation (Revelation 2:5); rather, He, through the Holy Spirit, ministered to the Laodicean congregation in order to provide antidotes to their spiritual blindness (that is, the penchant of many in the congregation toward materialism, which sidetracked them from their primary goal of following Christ). God promised relief from their spiritual blindness if they would put on the righteous garments of the saints, sacrificing their lives in service to their spiritual siblings, pursuing spiritual rather than physical goals (Revelation 19:8). Christ continually knocks on the door of the churches, offering salvation to those who turn to Him and promising those who overcome that they will rule with Him (Revelation 3:21), a message all God's flocks should heed (Revelation 3:22).
