What Is the Church's Work Today (Part Two)

Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

The function of the church, as understood within the context of God's purpose, is multifaceted and subject to change based on divine direction and the spiritual condition of its members. God's work through the church is a creative process, akin to salvation itself, with a significant focus on creating faith within individuals so they may respond in trust. The church is likened to a human body with many parts, each having different functions, yet all contributing to the same overarching goal under God's sovereign guidance. Just as historical figures like Noah, Abraham, and Moses were used by God for varied purposes at different times, the church's role adapts to the needs and circumstances determined by Him. At present, the church faces internal challenges that have led to division and spiritual decline. The primary work of the church today is not the external preaching of the gospel to the world, though this remains a responsibility for which preparation continues. Instead, the urgent task is the internal feeding of the flock, a more demanding and time-consuming effort to bring members to holiness. This shift in focus is necessitated by the destruction of foundational elements within the church, requiring a rebuilding process before it can effectively resume broader outreach. God's sovereignty dictates the direction and timing of the church's work, much like the cloud and pillar of fire guided the Israelites in the wilderness. When conditions change or challenges arise, the church must adjust accordingly, learning from historical patterns and prophecies to discern the path forward. The scattering of the flock demands that the shepherd's first responsibility be to regather the sheep and address the root causes of their dispersal, whether it be internal weaknesses or external threats. This involves a time of healing and rebuilding, as there is a season for every purpose under heaven, including a time to break down and a time to build up. The church's current state of division and spiritual sickness, marked by a loss of first love and lethargy, calls for repentance and a return to foundational beliefs. God has permitted these trials to awaken and purify the church, ensuring that nothing occurs without His will. The function of the church now is to amend its ways, to respond to God's warnings with genuine change, and to rely on Him for strength to overcome the tests faced. As the church reevaluates its convictions and aligns with God's purpose, it prepares for future blessings and the eventual resumption of its broader mission.

What Is the Church's Work Today (Part One)

Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

The function of the church is not static but adapts to circumstances and needs as directed by God. The church's primary role is not solely to preach the gospel to the world, though it remains a part of its work when appropriate. Instead, the church must focus on feeding the flock, nurturing spiritual growth, and strengthening faith among its members, especially during times of trial and scattering. This feeding involves providing detailed and intense teaching of the gospel to bring members to maturity, enabling them to trust God implicitly and to be transformed into His image. Not every member of the church performs the same function; just as in a body, different parts have different roles, yet all are necessary. These roles can shift over time as God moves individuals into various positions and responsibilities within the church. Similarly, the church as a whole does not always perform the same operation with the same intensity. Historical examples show that under persecution or other pressures, the church's approach changes, sometimes moving from public proclamation to personal witness or even to secretive gatherings for survival. God's sovereignty directs the church's work, determining when and how it moves or rests, much like the pillar of fire and cloud guided the Israelites. The church must respond to current needs, such as gathering scattered sheep and addressing the causes of their dispersal to prevent further fragmentation. Ultimately, the church's function is to align with God's creative purpose, fostering the development of His image in its members through testing, teaching, and faithful endurance under His control.

The Purpose of the Church

Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

The function of the church is to call out selected and chosen ones from this world to turn from satan's way into the way of God's law. Those called into the church learn the way of God's government and develop divine character during this mortal life. The church serves as God's instrumentality for aiding Him in bringing about the salvation of humanity by preparing and training dedicated personnel of God-beings who have rejected satan's false way and proved loyalty to God's government. This preparation equips the saints for the work of ministry and the edifying of the body of Christ until all come to the unity of the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God. The church functions as a spiritual organism united by common elements of one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of all. It exists as God's group called and arranged for a purpose, serving as a training school to supply all positions of leadership in the Kingdom when salvation opens to all the living. Every official in the government of God will have been tried, tested, trained, and qualified. The church preaches the gospel of the Kingdom of God as part of its work while emphasizing the feeding of the flock and preparation of the spiritual temple to which Jesus Christ will come. The church is not the instrumentality by which God saves the world, and Jesus Christ made no attempt to gain converts.

What Is the Church?

Sermon by Ryan McClure

The church functions as an assembly of those called by God to believe in Him and commit their lives through repentance, baptism, and receiving the Holy Spirit. It serves as a training ground where members learn to align their lives with God's instructions from the Bible under the leadership of Jesus Christ. The church provides instruction and fellowship to help members overcome their former ways and grow into the image of God. Its purpose includes preparing called-out ones to become rulers and teachers in the Kingdom of God by teaching them to observe all that Jesus Christ commanded. Members assemble to worship God in spirit and truth, exhort one another, and follow the teachings that lead to overcoming sin and the world.
