Drunkenness or addiction to alcohol is often used in scripture to compare the false sense of one's abilities and strengths, as well as the deadening of oneself to God and His law. Sadly, Noah, Lot, and Samson deadened their faculties through the spirit of drink. The apostle Peter refers to spiritual sobriety in I Peter 1:13 and I Peter 5:8 as the way to avoid Satan's traps and to stay morally alert. During this pagan holiday season (from Halloween to New Year's) when alcohol sales peak, the society at large has become intoxicated, both deadening its senses physically and spiritually to God's purpose and master plan. God warns His people that as the end time approaches, the great harlot will cause the inhabitants of the earth to be drunk with her fornication (Revelation 17:2). We cannot mix God's Spirit with the spirit of the great harlot. We must be careful not to mix the seductive spirit of the world with the Holy Spirit or God's truth.
