Worship is an act of acknowledging the worth of a divine being, an act if applied to any other person or thing, a celebrity, money, or pleasure, is rank idolatry. Worship, not merely a set of behaviors performed in a religious service, is a state of mind one must maintain 24/7. Worship is a response to what God is, what He has done for us, and for His magnificent future plan to create us in His Holy image, in short, to reproduce Himself. Love is a way of life, consisting of loving God with all our hearts and our neighbor as ourselves (Deuteronomy 6:4-5 and Leviticus 19:18). Jesus assured the woman at the well that the venue for worship is not as important as how to worship God, namely in spirit and truth (John 4:20). If we follow the example of our Lord and Savior as He worships in both private and public settings, we will learn how to establish a productive relationship with God the Father. We cannot follow Nadab and Abihu's example of "coloring outside the lines," presumptuously adding to or taking from what Christ modeled for us. We worship automatically whatever we consider worthy of our time (Deuteronomy 4:19-32); if it is anything other than Almighty God, it is blatant idolatry. We cannot rise any farther than the God we worship. Worship of the true God, not fuzzy notions derived from the traditions of man, must occupy our minds (in spirit and truth) perpetually.
