Those in power keep the people ignorant, fat, and happy so that they will not give the authorities any trouble. God says of Israel that Jeshurun grew fat and kicked, forsook God who made him, and scornfully esteemed the Rock of his salvation. When the Lord saw it, He spurned them because they are a perverse generation, children in whom is no faith. The sword shall destroy outside and there shall be terror within because they are a nation void of counsel with no understanding in them.
