God Always Defaults in Mercy
Sermon by Clyde FinkleaOur God always defaults in mercy, showing a deep feeling of pity, sympathy, compassion, and affection toward suffering people. When He looks at those in distress, He feels compassion, which precedes mercy, moving Him to act with lovingkindness. Compassion is a powerful awareness of another's suffering, creating a determination to help, while mercy is the compassionate action itself, offering relief from distress and showing forbearance or kindness. In the Parable of the Unmerciful Servant, Jesus illustrates this mercy, as the master, moved with compassion, forgave an enormous debt, holding back deserved punishment. This reflects God's mercy toward us, forgiving a debt of sin we could never repay. He desires us to show the same tender compassion and willingness to forgive others in their misery and distress. God's mercy restrains Him from giving us the judgment our sins deserve, as His love, grace, and mercy are intertwined. Every morning, He is ready with new mercies, never running out, for He is love itself. His desire is to bring everyone to repentance, taking no pleasure in the death of the wicked. At the very bottom of His heart lives mercy, and we are called to grow in His love and mercy, to be moved by the needs and sufferings of others, and to act mercifully, even as He is merciful. Jesus commands us to be perfect as our Father in heaven is perfect, which means to be merciful, for we are perfect in God's eyes when we reflect His mercy. If we truly have the love of God in us, we too will always default in mercy.
