Jesus Christ's Trial (Part One)
Sermon by Martin G. CollinsIn the arrest of Jesus Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, He demonstrated complete control over the situation, willingly surrendering Himself to His captors. He delayed in the Garden as the arresting party approached, went forth to meet them, and voluntarily gave Himself up. Even at the moment of arrest, He showed His power over the soldiers, grace towards His disciples, and mercy to His enemies. Jesus was arrested because He chose to give Himself up to die for our salvation, a voluntary act that no amount of weapons or troops could have forced if He had been unwilling. When confronted by the soldiers, Jesus initiated the arrest by asking whom they sought, and upon declaring, "I am," the arresting party drew back and fell to the ground, overwhelmed by the divine authority in His words. This display of power underscored that He was more than man, manifesting as God in flesh, and that His death was not coerced but a deliberate choice. His voluntary surrender was further evidenced by His ability to walk away, as He had done on previous occasions, yet He chose to submit to ensure His death would serve as a ransom for sin. Jesus also made it clear to those arresting Him that they were without excuse, as His divine glory was evident in His actions and words, rendering them helpless before Him. His command to let His disciples go free demonstrated His protective grace, ensuring their safety and fulfilling His earlier prophecies. Even towards His enemies, Jesus showed mercy at the moment of His arrest, accepting the cup of God's wrath to spare others, an act of profound sacrifice as He drank from it in their place.
