House of Mourning

Sermon by Bill Onisick

The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, for it is through sorrow that we are drawn to reflection and change. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted, and their mourning must lead to godly sorrow that transforms their lives. This mourning encompasses the pain of death and personal loss, the grief over the state of an evil world, and the deep lament for personal sin that contributed to the death of our Savior. To be truly blessed, we must allow this sorrow to circumcise our hearts, leading us to repent, to deeply reflect, and to grow in godly wisdom. The mark of God is a mark of deep sorrow and mourning for both the sins of the world and our own, standing in contrast to worldly avoidance of pain. As we mourn, we must come before God in humility, seeking His strength to overcome, and commit to never repeat the mistakes that grieve us. Through this process, we are reminded to count our days, to create a sense of urgency, and to put away lingering sins, living each day with the awareness of life's fleeting nature. Our faithful Redeemer loves us and came to heal the brokenhearted; when we return to Him in repentance, He restores and strengthens us with His Holy Spirit, rekindling our flame even when we are weak and beaten down.
