Are You a Christian?

'Ready Answer' by David C. Grabbe

The term christianos, first used in Antioch to describe the followers of Christ, emerged in a Gentile city receptive to the gospel, despite opposition from some Jews. Though initially possibly pejorative, implying scorn from opponents, the name does not inherently discredit its appropriateness for true disciples of Jesus Christ. The Greek word chrematizo in Acts 11:26 suggests a divine origin for the term, indicating that God may have intended christianos for describing Christ's followers among the Greek-speaking audience. The name directly references the Anointed One, Christos, without implication of falsehood. Paul, when addressed as a Christian by Agrippa, did not reject the term but embraced its implication, showing no objection despite his Hebrew identity. This acceptance underscores that repudiating the term could confuse or deny Christ, especially after preaching His message. Similarly, Peter in I Peter 4:14-16 uses christianos, highlighting that the issue lies not with the term itself, which means follower of Christ, but with those who claim it while holding beliefs and practices contrary to Christ's teachings. Distinguishing true Christians—those called by the Father, repentant, and transformed by God's Spirit—from nominal ones becomes necessary due to Satan's counterfeits. Just as Jesus distinguished true Israelites and true worshippers without discarding the terms, followers of Christ must clarify the label Christian rather than abandon it. The essential mark of a true follower remains belief and conduct, reflecting the fruit of God's Spirit, which cannot be ultimately counterfeited, regardless of the name applied.
