Holiness (Part 2)
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughThe call to be holy brethren, as addressed in Hebrews 3:1, signifies a profound state of being set apart by God. This designation does not primarily reflect a quality of life but indicates a changed relationship with Him, lifting us from the commonplace into a special connection with the Divine. As holy brethren, we are consecrated and sanctified, separated for His service, much like holy vessels or holy ground described in Scripture. This state of holiness, however, also implies a call to purity. Just as holy objects are to be treated with deference and respect due to their relationship with God, we too are to reflect purity in our conduct. Our holiness, unlike God's absolute holiness, is imputed by Him and derived through conformity to His will by the power of His Spirit. As holy brethren, we are urged to gird up the loins of our mind, to prepare for action, and to be self-controlled, striving to be holy in all our behavior. The command is clear: as He who called us is holy, we must also be holy in all our conduct, for it is written, "Be holy, for I am holy." This involves not only the sanctification by God but also our active choices and attitudes leading to a right way of life. Before conversion, we lived in ignorance, dominated by personal desires, but now, as holy brethren, we must cease living according to what is profane and seek to produce the divine likeness of holiness in every aspect of our behavior.
